The first Sacred Heart church in Wilton was built in 1906 at a cost of $3000. That original church was dismantled in 1959 and soon after a new church was built and dedicated in June of 1960. That church has served the parishioners very well, however, though the years the rain and snow did not easily flow off the roof of the church and hall which created ice and water problems. Those issues resulted in damage to the walls and ceilings over time.
Prior pastors and council members considered and researched several ideas to address the issues however the only solution to permanently fix the problem was to restructure the roof of the church and the parish hall. In 2015 Father Frank Schuster, the trustees, and the parish council were determined to address the roof and to also the need for dedicated space for religious education. Realizing the difficulty of this task of a parish size of under 100 households, they requested approval to move forward with the $400,000 project.
There were concerns and inconveniences along the way, but by the end of 2016 the project was completed through the generosity of donations and pledges from the parishioners, a $60,000 grant from Catholic Extension, and with a cash flow loan from the Parish Expansion Fund. The roof issues, which had been a concern for several years, have been finally addressed and there is now dedicated religious education space for the children of our parish. God is good.
